Down under, Palawan is famous for its Underground River located at the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park which is also known as Sabang’s St. Paul Subterranean River National Park. It is one of the most visited among tourists. Most tourists express their description of the Subterranean Underground River to be an enchanting place. The Underground River is an excellent scenic spot to visit.

Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park is one of the most protected areas in the Philippines. It was created to protect the impressive cave systems, lush old growth tropical rainforest, interesting wildlife, unspoiled natural beauty of the area and one of the most impressive cave systems in the world.

A bottomless cave under the rocky marble and limestone sea cliff of Mt. Saint Paul  is also present on the Island, where an 8,000 meters underground river course exists.  It is known as one of the world’s wonders and also considered as the longest, traversable underground rivers in the world.

Limestone karsts surround the mouth of the river cave as birds swoop and flutter around the boat while entering the cave. Along the beach shoreline near the river cave, long tailed macaques come to feed at a low tide. Other mammals seen include bearcats, badgers, porcupines, and bearded pigs. In the waters surrounding the underground river where sea cows also known as “Dugong”, and Hawksbill turtle are frequently seen on the surface.

The special feature of the park is to ride a boat and go inside the cave with a flashlight exploring the beautiful religious- like images of stalagmite and stalactite, which are all breathtaking views. Faunas that dwell there are also eye catching as well. Entertaining and well informed local guides propel the canoes that are safe and as well as ecologically sound and ideal for the silent appreciation of the cave. Watch out for guano (bat dung)! And always wear your safety helmet because you’ll never know if it’s water or the pee of the bat dropping from the cave!  Surely, visitors can enjoy and appreciate without worrying too much about this wonder of the natural world!

Outside the river’s mouth is a beautiful lagoon that teems with fish.  The park is inhabited by tourists who are greeted by a variety of exotic animals like the macaque monkeys, monitor lizards (bayawak) and snakes. No need to panic as they won’t hurt anyone as long as they are not rebuked. Just be careful with your food or they’ll come after you!
