Located in Northern part of Palawan, Coron offers 12 major attractions for island vacationers. One of Coron’s most famous attractions is the Kayangan Lake. The Kayangan Lake, also sometimes referred to as the Blue Lagoon, is said to be the cleanest lake in the whole of the Philippines. It is 20 minutes away by boat from the town’s pier, which is just a few minutes distant from the town proper.
In a secluded spot not visible behind the plants, trees and mountains in the mooring point, the lake is a picturesque landscape of gigantic limestone cliffs surrounding clear blue waters under the blue sky. The limestone rock formations also serve as an excellent backdrop for the translucent water of the lake.
To see the magnificent view, visitors must climb 6 to 10 minutes worth of steep steps up a small clearing. Beside a small cave, the opening at the top is the perfect spot from which to take photographs of the place. And because this viewing area offers a less-obstructed view of the bay, it is often the only angle people see of most above-sea-level pictures of the lake.
The trek towards the lake continuous down mountainous terrain. The steps, like the upward climb, are difficult and the wooden handrails are basic and simple. At the landing, there is a raised structure made of bamboo and wood blocks that goes on around the circular rocky edge of the lake. A few ladders are also attached to it to assist swimmers in going down the water.
The water is unbelievable fresh, markedly different from the sea water of the many islands in Coron. And underneath those differing shades of clear blue waters are some schools of fishes and stones of different sizes. The 10 feet bottom of the lake could also be seen above the water. But the lake does not only offer its visitors a refreshing swim, it also makes one experience the wonders of nature in its full splendor.
Most people describe the place as heaven, and being around such beauty is truly an awe-inspiring experience. It makes one think about the locals privileged to see and experience the beauty of nature every single day of their lives. And it makes one think about the many other hidden lakes and lagoons in the whole of Palawan, and hope that, like the Cayangan Lake, they’ll remain unexploited, unspoiled and untouched by commercialism.
The lake is still mostly undeveloped and all fees visitors are required to pay go to the upkeep of the place. Most locals advise vacationers to head on to the lake very early in the morning before it’s flooded by tourists in midday, but even with other people around, the lake is still like a sanctuary and gives vacationers the rare opportunity to commune with nature at its most pristine.
Experience peace and quiet. Experience nature’s great wonders. Experience crystal clear waters. And experience it all at the Kayangan Lake – a truly must-see place in the Coron island of Palawan, Philippines.
