Palawan, in the Western part of the Philippines, is fast becoming the number one vacation spot in the country. Its serene, pristine and unspoiled beaches are highly favored by foreign and local tourists alike. Palawan does not only boast of virgin beaches, it also happens to be a province rich in history and culture, filled with lots of must-see attractions. One of these is the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center, which is a place for animal lovers and endangered species preservation advocates.

The Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center, formerly known as the Crocodile Farming Institute, is an organization that promotes the conservation of wildlife in Puerto Princesa City, which is the capital of Palawan. At just 30 minutes’ drive from the city proper, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t include the Center on your itinerary. Here are other compelling reasons why you should go see it:

1. Be photographed holding a real and live crocodile!

The Institute breeds crocodiles and houses other Palawan endemic animals. The viewing and petting of baby crocodiles is allowed under the supervision of the Center’s animal trainers. Taking pictures is also permitted so you can have commemorate your experiences and add to your growing souvenirs to take home with you.

2. Be entertained and watch big crocodiles as they’re feed by handlers – or perhaps by you!

Outside the main building in a pond, five-foot or longer crocodiles can be viewed, photographed and fed by the visitors from the bridge over it. On Monday and Thursday afternoons, animal coaches feed these reptiles, offering great educational diversions especially for kids as the crocodiles prey on fish and devour foods being fed them.

3. Learn more about crocodiles and other animals in the Museum!

The gallery area in the main building has crocodile skeletons, sperm whale skeletons and other fossils. Your kids will better absorb everything about crocodiles in a museum with three-dimensional preserved crocodile remains than they ever will at school with just flat pictures of the animals.

4. Discover how crocodiles hatch!

In the Hatching area, visitors may be able to observe the reptiles in different points of development. They are placed in big plastic containers, segregated according to their age. And, of course, there are hatching crocodiles and picture-taking is allowed.

5. Walk with exotic animals around!

At the back of the building is a small wildlife park where animals roam around freely. There are bearded pigs, porcupines, mynah, hornbills, turtles, monkeys and other animals in this small but exciting zoo.

Truly, the Palawan Wildlife Rescue and Conservation Center is an interesting place to visit, especially for those vacationing with kids. It’s a local attraction worth your while to see when you’re in Palawan. The place is open from Mondays through Saturdays, but be sure to still plan your trip ahead to avoid any inconvenience. You could hire a jeepney or a cab, or better yet, inquire at the hotel where you’re staying for City Tour Packages that include a trip to the facility.
